Japanese tutor cost calculator
Last checked: 2026-11-06
Enter a real tutor's price to estimate your monthly and total lesson cost. Tutors set their own prices, so this page has no fixed rate. It runs in your browser.
The starting values are examples, not a quote. 19 is Preply's stated average in dollars, seen on one day. Replace it with a real teacher's regular price.
How this estimate works
- Per lesson: the price plus any fee percentage you enter.
- Per 50 minutes: the same price scaled to 50 minutes, so you can compare tutors with different lesson lengths.
- Per month: the price per lesson times your lessons a month.
- Total: all your lessons plus the trial, with the fee percentage applied to both.
Worked example
Keep the starting values: 19 dollars, 50 minutes, 8 lessons a month, 3 months, no trial and no fee. That is 24 lessons, or 20 hours. Each month costs $152.00, and the total is $456.00.
To check it against our tutor cost guide, enter 10 lessons a month for 1 month. The total is $190.00, the same as ten lessons at the average there, before any fees or taxes.
Prices to start from
| What we saw | What it means | |
|---|---|---|
| Preply | From $4, average $19 (platform's own figures). 10 listed tutors: 1,423 to 6,325 yen | Listing price for a 50-minute lesson |
| italki | 20 listed teachers: $5 to $48 | Trial lesson price, not the regular price |
These are listing prices on one day. They change often and depend on your currency and location. Preply showed yen in our session, and its average was in dollars. The two platforms show different things, so this is not a direct price comparison. We have not tested lessons on either platform, and we do not rank them.
What this tool leaves out
- The real checkout amount. Enter a fee percentage only if you know it. We have no sourced figure for platform fees, so it starts at 0.
- Packages and discounts. Enter the price you would actually pay per lesson. Read the current refund and switching terms before you buy a package.
- Currency conversion. Use one currency for every box.
- Results. This shows cost only. It cannot say how many lessons you need for a JLPT level. We found no study-hour figure in the JLPT FAQ.
Before you book, see how to compare tutors fairly. The official practice workbook can help you find your weakest section first, and the JLPT score calculator shows how section minimums work.
