JLPT score calculator

Enter your section scores to check them against the published JLPT marks. You must reach the overall mark and every section minimum. It runs in your browser, and your scores are not sent anywhere.
How this check works
We add your section scores and compare the total with the overall mark for your level. Then we compare each section with its minimum. The check is met only if all of these are met. A high total does not save you if one section falls short.
| Level | Overall mark | Section minimums |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | 100 / 180 | 19 of 60 in each of three sections |
| N2 | 90 / 180 | 19 of 60 in each of three sections |
| N3 | 95 / 180 | 19 of 60 in each of three sections |
| N4 | 90 / 180 | Language knowledge and reading 38 of 120, listening 19 of 60 |
| N5 | 80 / 180 | Language knowledge and reading 38 of 120, listening 19 of 60 |
N3's overall mark is higher than N2's. That is not a typo in the official table. If you meet every mark, the tool also reads your total against the official CEFR chart.
Worked example
Choose N2 and enter 32 for language knowledge, 38 for reading and 42 for listening. The total is 112 / 180. That is 22 points above the overall mark of 90, and each section is above 19. The chart shows B2 at 112 or higher.
Now choose N1 and enter 60, 60 and 18. The total is 138, which is 38 points above the overall mark of 100. But listening is 1 below its minimum, so the marks are not met and no CEFR level applies.
What this tool leaves out
- Raw practice marks. The real test uses scaled scores. Marks from a workbook are only a rough guide, so use this tool mainly with official scores.
- Missed sections. Skipping any section means failing. Your score report shows asterisks instead of scores, so do not enter a 0 to stand in for that.
- Changes to the marks. We copied them from our passing score guide. Check the official page if your result matters.
- The CEFR level for older tests. Score reports show it only since the December 2025 test, and it is reference information. It covers reading and listening, not speaking or writing.
- Other requirements. Schools and employers set their own rules. Check what they accept. See which level you need for Japan.
