Which JLPT level do you need for Japan?
Last checked: 2026-11-06
It depends on your goal: N4 or higher for Specified Skilled Worker (i), N2 as a benchmark for university admission, and N1 for the most points under the highly skilled system. The JLPT site lists these uses. Always confirm the current rule with the agency or school involved.
Level by goal
| Goal | Level the JLPT site lists |
|---|---|
| Japanese language school (Student visa institutions) | N5 or higher meets the language requirement |
| Specified Skilled Worker (i) | N4 or higher |
| Universities and other higher education | N2 or higher is a benchmark |
| Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, when language skills must be shown | N2 or higher |
| Business Manager | N2 or higher, for the applicant or a full-time staff member |
| Highly skilled professional points | N1: 15 points. N2: 10 points |
Highly skilled professional points
Under this system, applicants with 70 points or more receive preferential immigration treatment. JLPT points are one part of the total, so a certificate alone does not qualify you.
Medical and health careers
People with overseas medical licenses need N1 to take Japan's national medical practitioner exam. N1 is also required for the exams for dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, veterinarians and 13 other health professions. Overseas nursing school graduates need N1 for a prefectural assistant nurse exam.

What this does not tell you
For the 2026 rules on language-based work, see the Japanese requirement for a work visa.
This page covers official uses of the JLPT. Employers and schools can set their own requirements, and meeting a language rule does not guarantee a visa. For exam details, see the JLPT fee, passing scores and how to register.
The JLPT certificate does not expire, but some employers and schools set their own time limits. If one asks for a CEFR level, see the JLPT to CEFR chart.
Other tests can also be used for some of these goals. Compare JLPT, JFT-Basic and NAT or JLPT and BJT. Planning to study in Japan? See language school costs and MEXT and JASSO scholarships.
