How to register for the JLPT, by country
Last checked: 2026-11-06
You register for the JLPT with the local host institution for your test city, not on a central website. In Japan, you apply through MyJLPT. Elsewhere, each host sets its own fee, dates and method, so the first step is to find your host.
How to register, step by step
- Find your city. Open the official list of test cities and hosts. It covers 102 countries and areas, and shows which cities hold each test.
- Get the Test Guide. Read your host's guide, and confirm how to register.
- Register and pay. The JLPT site says this falls around March to April for July, and around August to September for December. Windows vary by city.
- Get your voucher. It comes in early July or early December.
- Take the test, then get your results. See when results come out.
2026 fees and dates by country
We checked these host pages one by one. Fees are for one level.
| Country | Tests held | Fee | December 2026 window |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA (AATJ) | December only, 21 sites | $135, all levels | General registration until September 16 |
| UK: London (SOAS) | July and December | £115 | Usually opens around August. Fully booked for December 2026 |
| Philippines | Manila, Cebu and Davao: July and December | N1, N2: P2,200. N3 to N5: P1,800 | August 25 to September 7 |
| Australia: Sydney | December all levels. July N4 and N5 only | N1 to N3: $105 + $6.81 booking fee. N4, N5: $95 + $6.27 | August 28 to September 10 |
| Canada: Vancouver | July and December | Not on the host page | Opened September 8, now closed |
| India: New Delhi | July and December | Not on the host page | Closed |
| Japan | July and December | 7,500 yen | See JLPT cost |
All December 2026 windows have ended, but the table shows when to expect them next year. We have not seen 2027 fees or dates. The Sydney fee is shown with a dollar sign on the UNSW page and includes GST. We could not find fees for India on the host pages we read, and one host page we opened was out of date. Ask your host.
What the country pages make clear
These points come from comparing the pages above.
- The USA has one test a year. The official list shows December only, so a failed test means about a year's wait.
- Windows can be short. In the Philippines and Sydney, the December 2026 window ran 14 days by our count, and both pages say it can close early.
- One test may not offer your level. In July, Canberra offers N1 to N3 only and Sydney offers N4 and N5 only.
- Some cities only run in one month. In the UK, Edinburgh runs in December only. In Canada, Toronto, Ottawa, London and Montreal also run in December only. Check the official list for your city.
Mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for the deadline. The AATJ warns that seats fill quickly, and SOAS was fully booked for December 2026.
- Choosing a level too fast. The AATJ says level and site are final after payment, with no refunds or transfers. SOAS says payments are non-refundable and non-transferable. See how to choose a level.
- A name that does not match your ID. SOAS says the name must match your official ID.
- Ignoring age rules. SOAS does not accept candidates aged 15 or under, and needs consent forms at 16 and 17. Some US sites also have rules for minors.
- Needing accommodations late. The US deadline was September 4 in 2026, and late requests were refused. Ask early.
- Planning a trip to test in Japan. Read who can test in Japan first.
When to set your reminder
Our own rule: set a reminder for March 1 for the July test, and August 1 for the December test. Then check your host's page every week until the window opens.
Before test day, read what to bring to the JLPT.
