Apply to JASSO in Japan. Overseas, apply through the EJU representative for your country or region.
Do you need the EJU?
It depends on the school. JASSO says each university decides if it uses the EJU, and some do not. As of October 2026, JASSO counted 954 schools using it for admission, including 508 universities.
JASSO also says the EJU does not itself decide if you are accepted. It is one input that schools use to assess your Japanese and basic knowledge. Check each school's requirements. We could not find a general rule for how long scores stay valid, so ask the school.
EJU or JLPT?
| EJU | JLPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Undergraduate study in Japan | General Japanese ability |
| Result | Scores, no pass or fail | Pass or fail, N5 to N1 |
| Writing | Yes, in the Japanese subject | No |
| Other subjects | Science, mathematics, Japan and the World | None |
| Fee in Japan | 12,000 or 23,000 yen | 7,500 yen |
| Tests a year | Two | Two, or one in some cities |
The two can overlap. For JASSO's Honors Scholarship at a university, Study in Japan lists N2 or higher, or 200 or more on the EJU Japanese subject (reading, listening and listening-reading). See MEXT and JASSO scholarships. The same 200 mark can count for some work visa language rules.
Our own example: if you sit two EJU subjects and one JLPT in Japan, the fees add up to 30,500 yen. Add this to your wider language school budget.
